A little fable about how to walk in the woods, There Be Monsters was inspired when my friend Jim Horton did a reduction wood engraving for a lovely edition of Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky.
While my little story is short and sweet it does have an interesting
plot twist. This is, officially, a second edition though with
significant changes from the original.
Originally I produced 25 copies of this book back in 1998 though half
of them were destroyed by water damage while they were still loose
sheets. The remaining dozen copies were all bound in different ways
exploring unique presentations for a small book such as this, out of
those trial bindings the one I liked best was the model for this
edition. The original release was completely hand colored and when I
decided to reissue this book the thought of doing that to 140
illustrations seemed a bit daunting so this time around the monster
linoleum cut was used as a keyline block and 5 other blocks were
created to make the color run. The little green man wood engraving on
the title page is still hand colored and there are some additional
lines and touches done to the linocut as well.
